A Special Camp for Water Loving
Dogs and Their Humans!
Under a woodsy pavilion, within the green forest
parameters of the beautiful Beltzville State Park, you gather with others who
have come with dogs longing to make a splash. Water gear in tow, you walk your
dog down the shaded paths to the grass clearing that welcomes you to the
pristine waters of the park’s 949 acre fresh water lake. A breathtaking
background for your learning adventure! The lake, alive with abundant wildlife
and protected by the gorgeous Pocono Mountains, draws you to the water’s edge.
At ease with the friendly teaching staff, you look forward
to the lectures and splash lessons that will help shape your dog into a super
water companion - a water companion who can perform meaningful water work like
leaping from a boat to retrieve a drifting oar, towing you to shore
after a
swim, diving for your keys, delivering items from shore to a boater or locating
submerged articles by scent. The day begins and your instructors guide you
through various water work stations and provide you with supportive,
constructive coaching respective of your performance level and goals. You can
hardly believe how fast your dog is learning and how easy it is for you to enjoy
the moment with him. Your dog’s eyes tell of his happiness.
For lunch you are provided nourishment for the body and
the heart. It is a delicious catered meal served under the pavilion, surrounded
by sheltering pine trees, lovable canine moochers, new friends and the laughs
from never ending dog stories. You smile.
The
afternoon lecture gives your weary canine athlete a
time to rest while providing you with energizing knowledge. You glance at your
camp program. Which one of the exciting topics will it be today What Our
Dogs Are Telling Us About Their Health; Canine Physical Therapy, Water Scent
Work, Selecting a Dog for Water Work, Creating the Desire to Learn, The
Intuitive Touch or Canine Advocacy?
After a fun and fulfilling day at
the water you and your dog return to the camp’s host hotel, The Holiday Inn
and Conference Center of Lehigh Valley, PA. Minutes from downtown Allentown, Pa.
and twenty minutes from Lehigh Valley International Airport (ABE), this award
winning hotel offers a full Restaurant, Lobby Bar, Fitness Center, E-Space &
Game Room, Outdoor Courtyard Pool and 175 guest rooms. Your first floor room has
easy access to the large rear lawn - perfect for canine wake up and bedtime
walks. You and your roommate ponder over the list of area restaurants and
finally agree to Japanese cuisine. Later you meet with friends at the camp
store, The Nautical Dog. The first floor store is loaded with goodies from
training equipment to camp fashion wear and more. You pick out a few new toys
for your accomplished puddle pouncer and settle into a store chair to watch a
training video. Later you return to your room where sleep quickly meets you with
dreams of new Splash Camp adventures.
Splash Camp welcomes adult handlers who are able to wade
in, swim with a life jacket and sit balanced on a boat. Healthy, non-aggressive
dogs, of any breeding, who are four months old or older and love to be in the
water are welcome. We ask that you limit yourself to one dog at camp so you can
better indulge and appreciate the importance and wonder of this dog’s special
learning experience.
Our camp goals are to awaken awareness of the canine mind,
body and spirit, to help you feel the bliss of sharing a positive water
experience with your dog and to reward you and your dog for becoming a vital and
loving team. Our training goals are to create canine joy and desire for
learning. Compulsion based training techniques are not employed at this
camp. We
strongly feel that taking away a dog’s choice to seek safety or to explore the
water at his/her own pace will escalate fear and
create handler or water
avoidance behaviors.
